Before you hire a family law attorney, take the time to interview him or her thoroughly to make sure your working styles and goals for the case are similar. Here are seven different categories of interview questions to ask during your initial consultation:

Experience

  • Do you specialize in family law?
  • What types of cases do you usually take on, and what types of cases do you feel most passionate about?
  • Also, how many years have you been practicing?
  • What percentage of your cases have settled out of court, and what percentage have gone on to trial?
  • Do you see my case as particularly unique, and -- specifically -- what expertise can you bring to my case?

    1. Identify key goals, tasks, job specs and attributes for account positions then ask question: How to do, how to become …
    2. Listen questions carefully, then ask by your self : what are things related to account field before answering.
    3. Always ask by yourself: What are proofs that are required for this position?

    Sample attorney interview questions

    1. What percentage of your practice is in Family Law, specifically in divorce and custody cases?
    2. What types and amounts of support payments are likely to be required after the divorce is final?
    3. What kind of property division is likely when the divorce is final?
    4. How long should the divorce process take?
    5. What other options should I consider besides litigation and what are the advantages or disadvantages of each?
    6. How much “on the floor” experience do you have in family law/custody cases in this county?
    7. Are you familiar with the judges in this county, in particular Judge XXXXXX?
    8. What is your normal hourly rate?
    9. Are there any issues in my case that you haven’t handled before?
    10. Can I get support money during the period of separation, or must I pay support money during the period of separation?
    11. Do you have any personal feelings about the positions you would have to take if you represented me?
    12. What do you feel my chances are of getting full custody, joint custody, increased time, etc?
    13. Do you have experience with divorce cases?
    14. How many of the cases you have handled involved issues found in my case such as custody, support, business valuations, or large financial settlements?
